DEFINITION
Shoot-and-Scoot is an artillery tactic in which a gun or artillery unit rapidly occupies a firing position, delivers its fire mission, and then displaces to another location before the enemy can detect, target and engage it with counter-battery fire. The idea is simple: an artillery gun is most vulnerable after it fires because its firing activity can reveal its location to enemy surveillance and counter-battery systems. Simply, you do not stay where you have just fired. In modern warfare, artillery is no longer simply about how far a gun can shoot. It is also about how quickly it can fire, relocate, and survive to fire again. Bharat’s artillery modernisation reflects this changing reality, with systems such as Dhanush explicitly incorporating shoot-and-scoot capability.
THE BREAKDOWN
Fire - “Strike the Target”
Purpose: To deliver artillery fire against a designated target.
Systems\: 155 mm howitzers, self-propelled guns, rocket artillery, fire-control systems and networked artillery command systems.
Tactical Effect: The artillery unit delivers concentrated fire while remaining in position only for the time necessary to complete its assigned fire mission. Modern artillery increasingly relies on accurate targeting and rapid-fire missions, rather than remaining in one location and continuously firing.
The objective is, therefore, Arrive → Fire → Leave.
Detect: “The Enemy Is Looking”
Purpose: To recognise that firing an artillery weapon can expose its approximate location.
Systems: Counter-battery radars, UAVs, acoustic sensors, electronic surveillance and other ISR systems.
Tactical Effect: Once an artillery position is detected, the enemy can attempt to calculate its location and respond with counter-battery fire.
This is why modern artillery warfare has become a race between; Who can fire first? And Who can locate the firing gun first?
Displace: “Do Not Stay”
Purpose: To move the artillery system away from the firing position before enemy counter-fire arrives.
Systems: Self-propelled artillery, truck-mounted guns, high-mobility vehicles and rapidly deployable artillery systems.
Tactical Effect: Reduces the probability that the artillery unit will be destroyed or damaged by return fire. This is where the “scoot” comes in. The gun has completed its firing task and rapidly moves away from the location from which it fired.
Reposition: “Become Difficult to Predict”
Purpose: To prevent the enemy from anticipating where the artillery unit will fire from next.
Systems: Multiple prepared positions, mobile artillery platforms, navigation systems and communications networks.
Tactical Effect: Creates uncertainty for enemy counter-battery forces.
The objective is not simply to move quickly. It is to ensure that the enemy cannot reliably predict the next firing location.
Shoot-Scoot-Shoot: “Survive to Fire Again”
Shoot-and-scoot is therefore not a single movement. It becomes a continuous cycle: Move → Deploy → Fire → Displace → Reposition → Fire again
The tactical value comes from maintaining this cycle without losing combat effectiveness.
WHY DRONES HAVE CHANGED THE GAME
The rise of drones has made shoot-and-scoot even more important.
A drone can potentially:
detect artillery movement,
observe firing positions,
correct artillery fire,
conduct battle-damage assessment,
and support targeting.
This creates a dangerous combination: Drone sees → artillery locates → counter-battery fire follows.
Consequently, artillery units increasingly need to assume that their firing position may be exposed almost immediately after firing. The Russia–Ukraine war has made this especially visible, with artillery, drones and counter-battery systems operating in an increasingly interconnected battlefield.

This does not mean static artillery has become useless. There are situations where sustained fire from established positions remains valuable. Rather, modern artillery increasingly combines firepower with mobility and survivability.
THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND SHOOT-AND-SCOOT
The tactic becomes much more effective when the artillery system can rapidly perform several functions:
Navigation: Knowing exactly where the gun is and where it needs to move.
Fire Control: Rapidly calculating firing data.
Positioning: Getting the gun accurately orientated toward its target.
Mobility: Moving rapidly after completing the fire mission.
Communication: Receiving new targets and transmitting firing information.
Survivability: Reducing the time spent exposed in a firing position.
This is why modern artillery is increasingly becoming a networked mobile system rather than simply a cannon on wheels.
THE BHARATIYA PERSPECTIVE
For Bharat, shoot-and-scoot is particularly relevant because its potential operational environments are extremely diverse, from the plains of the western theatre to the mountains of the northern frontier. The Indian Army’s artillery modernisation includes several systems designed around greater mobility and modern fire-control capabilities.
Dhanush: The indigenous 155 mm/45-calibre Dhanush explicitly lists shoot-and-scoot capability among its features. It also incorporates automated fire control, inertial-navigation-based positioning and artillery command-and-control integration. This is important because it represents the transformation of artillery from a manually positioned gun system toward a more digitally integrated and mobile platform.
K9 Vajra-T: The K9 Vajra-T represents another dimension of Bharat's mobile artillery capability: self-propelled tracked artillery. Its mobility allows artillery formations to manoeuvre with greater freedom than conventional towed systems. The platform has also gained importance in high-altitude deployments, demonstrating the requirement for mobile artillery across varied terrain.
Mounted Gun Systems: Bharat is also pursuing mounted artillery, where a large-calibre gun is integrated onto a high-mobility truck. This approach attempts to combine the firepower of a conventional howitzer + the mobility of a military truck. The Mounted Gun System derived from the ATAGS family is specifically associated with rapid deployment and shoot-and-scoot capability.
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR BHARAT
The importance of shoot-and-scoot becomes clearer when we consider the geography of Bharat's potential battlefields.
Western Theatre: Against Pakistan, artillery warfare could involve relatively open terrain where drones, counter-battery radars, precision fires, and long-range artillery make exposed gun positions increasingly dangerous. Mobility therefore becomes a major survivability factor.
Northern Frontier: Along the Himalayan frontier, the challenge is different. Terrain restricts movement, roads are limited and logistics are difficult.
Here, the question becomes:
Can an artillery system deliver powerful fire while remaining mobile enough to survive in difficult terrain?
This is one reason mobile artillery systems have become increasingly important in Bharat's northern military posture.
THE KARGIL LESSON
The Kargil War of 1999 remains an important reference point for understanding the importance of artillery to Bharat. The conflict demonstrated the extraordinary importance of artillery fire in mountainous warfare, particularly the role of the Bofors 155 mm guns in supporting Indian troops. But the battlefield has changed dramatically since 1999.
Kargil-era artillery warfare did not operate in today’s environment of, ubiquitous tactical drones, persistent ISR, sophisticated counter-battery systems, digital fire control, and rapidly proliferating precision weapons. The lesson for contemporary Bharat is therefore not simply “more artillery.” It is More mobile, accurate, networked and survivable artillery.
SHOOT-AND-SCOOT VS. “FIREPOWER”
We traditionally think of artillery strength as: How powerful is the gun?
Modern warfare asks several additional questions: How quickly can it fire? How accurately can it hit? How quickly can it move? How difficult is it to detect? How quickly can it receive another target? Can it survive long enough to fire again? And the answer lies in:
Firepower + Mobility + Information + Survivability = Modern Artillery Effectiveness
